It is the vintage that outranked some of France's … Warren Winiarski. In 1969 Warren Winiarski sampled Nathan’s Cabernet Sauvignon and became hooked on the area. By 1970 had purchased the adjoining land to become the winery’s first vineyards, Stag’s Leap Vineyards, AKA S.L.V. In 1972, Winiarski built the Stag’s Leaps … Warren Winiarski planting the SLV vineyard. Stag’s Leap is a winery that was founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski after he bought a 44-acre plot of land (next to a 66-acre vineyard owned by Nathan Fay) for the ‘princely sum’ of just under $200,000.

Winiarski spoke to me about how he came to buy Fay’s vineyard, about the uniqueness of the Stags Leap District (SLD), and about his own vineyard. He also responded to a column by James Laube (“The Thrill is Gone,” Wine Spectator , Aug. 31, 2006 Issue) in which the writer took 10 Napa Valley wineries to task for “underperforming.”
